Sugarcane, corn and trees are used to create our eco products, with no oil, petrochemicals, plastics or other unsustainable products in sight. We source sustainable materials, research innovative renewable products and investigate new processing and packing options to reduce carbon emissions and our impact on the environment.
SUGARCANE Sugarcane is a fast growing plant and is a highly renewable resource. It can grow to maturity within just nine months to reach about three metres tall, on average. After sugarcane has been pressed to extract the sugar, a fibrous material remains. This material, known as bagasse, was once thrown away by the sugar industry, but now it’s put to good use to make pulp for packaging. Sugarcane bagasse is renewable, biodegradable and compostable. Detpak uses two types of material to manufacture the I am eco™ range: bagasse sugarcane pulp and bagasse sugarcane board.
BAGASSE SUGARCANE PULP Eco plates, bowls and boxes are made from moulded bagasse sugar cane pulp. They are sturdy and have great thermal properties.
BAGASSE SUGARCANE BOARD Bagasse sugarcane board is a new material that Detpak has developed. It contains 100% recycled content, diverting waste from landfill. To make this material, bagasse is converted into solid board sheets that can be printed and formed like traditional paperboard. An added benefit of bagasse sugarcane board is that the sheets can be transported more efficiently – saving energy and carbon emissions. Our eco Pails are made with sugarcane board. Bagasse sugarcane board is a new sustainable product, available as a direct result of Detpak’s commitment to investigate and trial alternate renewable materials. For every 10 tonnes of sugarcane processed, about three tonnes of bagasse is produced. Sugarcane is one of the largest crops in the world, based on volume of production – about 1.83 billion tonnes is produced each year along with about 610 million tonnes of bagasse. Diverting this material from the waste stream and landfill through transformation into other products will make a big difference to the environment. Sugarcane bagasse is renewable, biodegradable and compostable.
TREES – PAPER AND PAPERBOARD Paper is a natural fibre made from trees. It is renewable, recyclable, compostable and biodegradable. Not all papers are created equal when you consider their environmental credentials. Detpak only sources paper and paper board from large reputable paper mills with evidence of sustainable and ethical forestry practices. We take our role as an environmentally responsible manufacturer seriously. Only managed plantation timber is used in our facilities and we regularly audit our suppliers to make sure they meet our high sustainability standards.
CORN Natural starches or carbohydrates from plants like corn can be processed to create a clear, plastic-like film or bioplastic. Unlike the traditional polyethylene (PE) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics, these innovative films and bioplastics are naturally biodegradable and compostable. They can be used to line and protect paper and board packaging as well as moulded into cutlery and container lids.
PLA BIOPLASTIC Polylactic acid (PLA) is a natural starch derived from plants like corn and sugarcane that is processed to create PLA bioplastic. PLA film comes from annually renewable plants and does not use oil or petrochemicals. Crystallised polylactic acid (CPLA) is used in products that need to cope with higher temperatures. This form of PLA can withstand temperatures up to 85°C without warping, deforming or breaking. This makes it perfect for cutlery, cup lids and soup container lids
